It was a gorgeous sunny weekend, and I started it out on Saturday morning with a planned 4 hour ride.
20 miles in, this happened:
So I called my Mom to come and get me, then I went home, changed the tire, and went back out to finish my ride. It made my 4 hour ride into a 6 hour thing though. Ah well.
The run off the bike was actually pretty darn good. I am happy about that.
Today I went for a 9 mile run on the dirt roads near my house. It was pretty freaking awesome.
I decided to check out my “pool” (aka Pleasant Pond) and check the temp.
The offical temperature of the pond is FREAKING COLD. Pretty though.
So I used it for an ice bath. I am going to attempt an OWS next week. I might wear 2 wetsuits.
I hope you all had a great weekend!!

You’re pretty amazing to be training in the freezing waters of Maine! Good idea with the dollar bill…too bad it didn’t work. Way to go back out there and finish your ride. Keep up the good work!

I’m too scared to swim in the cold… I can do the ice bath thing and paddle a bit but putting your face in… you’re a brave lady!

Very hard core – once I got the pickup, I’m quite sure I would have called it a day.

bummed the dolla trick did not work–

really HOW COLD is that water???
You can road trip it down to my neck of the woods and swim here–the water is a balmy 58* or so

The dollar bill trick is more of a myth, sucks about the tire issue
Nice training
Bummer that the dollar bill trick didn’t work! Glad you got it all fixed up and got back out there. I woulda bailed after getting picked up. Way to stick it out!
Has all of the snow melted up there yet?
BWAHAHAHA. I am being a brat….

If one wetsuit helps make you faster, then two wetsuits is going to be like strapping a propellor to your ass!

Bummer about your tire. I wouldn’t have had a clue what to do…. We were in Caratunk fishing and I was going to run south while they fished and have them pick me up on the way home but I decided not to because it was so warm, I didn’t have my hydration belt and the stores were too few and far between. Plus I didn’t trust my husband and his friend to pay attention to the time and remember to leave to come get me. lol. We did get to see my BIL though–he guides for PRO. They were just finishing training.
A great thing to carry along is duct tape. I think it works better than a dollar bill.

GU and Powerbar wrappers work better than cash, plus you get to eat them before using! Not sure if 2 wetsuits will be enought this early, unless you add a hoodie and booties. Maybe a drysuit?

I have never heard of the dollar bill trick. Thanks for your dose of clinical study to let me know not to count on it. We were really looking out for each other this weekend, weren’t we!
I’m glad that you were able to get your ride finished and you look so happy to run!
Need a swim partner for the Pleasant Pond swim this weekend? I’m going for 1.5 and I’m actually looking for some cold water… with less than three weeks until Alcatraz and all. I swam Lake George yesterday and it wasn’t too bad, almost warm.
Great weekend my dear despite the blown tire!

Sounds like an eventful ride! Way to get back out there! I carry a couple of dollar bills for emergencies but wouldn’t have thought of trying that.

haha, love that you can use your pool as an ice bath! and i’m obviously not hard core enough b/c i don’t keep spare tires at home

Yuk! We had the same thing happen on our ride. Dave picked up some glass and ripped his tire. Total of 3 tubes down and we stuck a used honey stinger gel packet instead of a dollar bill!
It got us to a bike shop so he could get a new tire but turn a planned 4hr ride into a 6+ hr sufferfest as it got freaking hot (93*)!

Stupid tires!
But you persevered and that is what counts. Good call on the pond as an ice bath!
Never heard of that trick, granted I’ve only been doing the biking thing for three months!
Good luck in the freezing cold waters of Maine!

You have such a positive outlook btw – I love your blog
– but you scare me with this water temps business, I will be in NH soon and thinking it will be sooo cold….

What! Ok, now I wanna know about the dollar bill trick!! Gonna have to google that one
– I wondered how warm the water would be up where you are. Down here in KY they’re unusually warm for this time of year, right around 75. The open water swim I did in MS was 80. Almost like soup

I think you’re supposed to fold the dollar bill a couple of times to make it thick enough to hold pressure. An empty GU packet works pretty well too.

You always have the best looking scenery for training. That being said FREAKING COLD is not cool…….

Great ride, congrats.
