I am really getting excited to leave for Fireman Ironman Camp! I feel really fortunate to go to Lake Placid before the race and scout out the course and learn from folks who have done it multiple times.
The camp doesn’t start until Friday, but I am heading to Lake Placid tomorrow hopefully getting there in time to go for a one loop swim around Mirror Lake with my friends Steve and Jay who are also doing IMLP. I am going to make dinner for us that night (it will involve pasta – shocker!) and was going to include cookies for dessert…but the Caratunk Crew ate them all.
Mostly me. But I like to blame the boys.
I have a pretty mellow day planned on Friday, as camp doesn’t officially start until that evening. It kind of feels like a real vacation day – I have only a swim workout to do, and I don’t have to fit it in around anything! That is such a weird feeling! Since I can’t sit still, I am sure I will go for a hike or check out some stuff at the Olympic center or something.
Saturday is the big day. I am biking 2 full loops of the course, a full race rehearsal – including a special needs stop! Before we go, we are going to have an on the road maintenance class – I am really stoked for this because I can easily (yet slowly…no pit crew for me!) change a tire, but if much else goes wrong, I am kind of screwed. I carry duct tape and a Leatherman with me where ever I go, in my little head that is enough to fix anything.
What? Doesn’t every one carry duct tape & a Leatherman in their flat kit?
Anyway, this recon should give me a good idea as to how long it might actually take me to bike the course on race day (providing things go as planned, as they rarely do). Also I hope to make any really bonehead mistakes here instead of on race day.
One can hope, right?
This will be an awesome weekend and I can’t wait to report back with lots of great stories and pictures. Rumor has it Matt Long is going to be there – if you haven’t read his book, The Long Run, you should. He is a super inspiring person, and I really look up to him.
Another little update…I signed up for Ironman Mont Tremblant for 2012! I am such a bonehead.
