In my life, nothing has made my hair stand on end like the swim start of an Ironman. There is so much excitement and anticipation floating around that the air gets all crackley in the seconds before the gun goes off. Then the churning mosh pit of bodies makes the water look like someone turned on a blender.
I remember watching the swim start of Ironman Lake Placid last year, watching the thousands of bodies pushing forward to swim around this teeny tiny lake.
I thought, “Holy crap. This is nuts. There is no way I am ever doing this.”
Then, of course, I signed up the next day, figuring I would jump off the edge and learn how to land on the way down.
The time to test my landing gear is fast approaching. In one week I will be stepping into Mirror Lake with about 3000 other people to put the “icing on the cake” of my Lake Placid journey.
Actually, just to make things crystal clear, I will stepping into the water well behind about 2700 or so of those people.
I go from being excited, to scared, to excited, to wanting to do a runaway bride type of thing at the start.
Picture that. Gun goes off, 2999 people all start swimming. One short girl in a wetsuit turns away from Mirror Lake and goes running to the Lake Placid Brewery.
Just saying, it could happen.
Overall I feel pretty good about the race (when I am not freaking out about it), although it is really a weird feeling to have something that you worked so hard for over so much time suddenly be upon you.
I am heading to Lake Placid on Thursday (in 4 days), hope to get in Mirror lake for a partial loop swim that say, then I am chilling out for the rest of the weekend (with a few short light workouts planned).
I love being in Lake Placid, and I am super excited to get to meet up with lots of blogger buddies at the race, I think a bunch of us are unoffically meeting at the athlete dinner on Friday night for a freak out session.
Race plan. Yeah, I have it all planned out and will talk about that in my next post. Basically boils down to this:
Go until you stop. Then go some more.
