Lots of great things went on this weekend, so I am going to do a random post!
I am a Brooks girl
I have worn Brooks since I started running. Through the years I have tried other brands of running shoes and I always come back to Brooks -they are just AWESOME. They also have fantastic apparel and accessories that are perfect for active people.
SO I was super excited to find out that I was accepted into the Brooks ID program!
Yesterday John and I had a slew of Christmas parties to go to in southern Maine.
Actually we only had 1 to go to, but we had a lot of people to see before the party. This loosely translates to hanging out on Commercial Street (my favorite street in Portland). It was tons of fun and I was the designated driver so I got to just sit back and watch the show.
Then the fun really started, because we went J’s Oyster for a beer – which is just about the best little bar around. I have yet to have an Oyster there (I see plenty of them around), but I always leave having made a few new friends.
The new friend I met this time was named Larry. When I sat he told me he was staging an Occupy J’s Protest, saying, that he had been occupying “this bar stool” for 25 years.
He was in his 60’s and sucked down whiskey like water.
The stories he told lead me to believe he either a) watches a LOT of mafia movies and has a very active imagination or b) he once actually worked for the mafia. Either way Kristel and I were thoroughly entertained.
Suddenly, we realized we were running late for our Christmas party, so we made a quick exit and went on our way.
Fish Out of Water
I went for my first swim since September (first time in a pool since May). I imagined I would be swimming like a cat and gasping for air, but it wasn’t really that bad. Sharpie gave me a nice workout to get me going again, and although I felt a little clunky and out of breath, it was really good.
I talked with Sharpie after my swim and we came up with a plan for drills to do that will focus on strengthening my weaknesses. I was so excited after I got off the phone with her I wanted to go to the pool right away.
Heart Rate Training
Heart rate training is going really well – I am still struggling with keeping my HR down when running hills. It is driving me slightly crazy but I know the pay-off is going to be huge for me if I stick with it and work hard to keep my HR down.
I think the hardest part is swallowing your pride a little and not think about your pace. In an attempt to keep myself from worrying about my pace I changed my Garmin to only show HR and time.
I feel so fortunate and thankful right now.
A forester I used to work with in my very first job out of college called me on Monday and said he had heard about my job ending in April. He suggested that I send my resume in to his boss because they were hiring. I had seen the job but didn’t really feel I was qualified based on the job description, but I was really interested in the program.
The program was really right up my alley – the whole reason I went to school to be a forester was because I wanted to be working with small landowners .
So I emailed my resume to my friend’s boss, who emailed me and asked me if I could interview that Thursday. I interviewed and then was offered the job.
The. Very. Next. Day.
WHAT??? So quick, right? I start my new job in January and I am really excited. Porter can still come to work with me, so that is awesome.
It is really a relief to not have to worry about a job now. Instead I can now worry about things like…how is this going to affect my training?
