For a number of years I went with a group of friends to ski to any of the various huts that are part of the 10th Mountain Huts system.
The 10th Mountain Hut Association manages a system of 34 backcountry huts in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, connected by 350 miles of suggested routes. The name of the organization honors the men of 10th Mountain Division of the U.S. Army, who trained during World War II at Camp Hale in central Colorado.
It is freaking awesome. Here is a photo I took in 2007 from the front porch of the Jackal Hut after a storm.
It is some good climbing to get to these huts (I have my Amrita bars packed), and they are both at around 11,000 feet. So while I won’t be doing any tri-specific training, I WILL be getting plenty of exercise!
When I get back in about 10 days, I will post a trip report with lots of pictures (and funny stories I am sure.)
Thanks for reading!
